Weird or Uncommon Pregnancy Symptoms

It would be really nice if the pregnancy symptoms women experienced were mild and made the journey of having a new baby incredibly easy. While that does happen for some women, others can experience symptoms that run the gamut, from typical pregnancy symptoms to the strange and unusual. It can be challenging to know if these weird and uncommon pregnancy symptoms are normal or not, especially if you are a first-time mother. Let’s take a look at a few of them to help you decide.

Craving Non-Food Items

Pregnancy cravings are very much a typical pregnancy symptom. Still, craving non-food items, even ice, is not normal and is very much something you should speak to your doctor about. These cravings can indicate a condition called PICA and can be dangerous. While it may seem uncommon, researchers have shown that PICA can affect up to 47.5% of pregnancies!

Here is a reputable post, if you want more information on PICA

Sharp Pains in Unexpected Areas

While you’re pregnant, you may experience acute shooting pain through your pelvic area. This is nothing to worry too much about, but it is a rather weird pregnancy symptom. The condition is affectionately called “lightning crotch” because of how quickly the sharp pains can come and go.

In other words, they hit fast and hard like a bolt of lighting and can feel like anything from a quick stabbing feeling to a sharp and quick burn. It’s like this, but in your crotch. It’s awesome being a woman sometimes!

Excessive Body Hair

Pregnancy hormones can do bizarre things, and this one is definitely weird. Even if you have never been a hairy person, you absolutely can be during pregnancy! During pregnancy, these hormones can become unbalanced. The result is body hair in places you have never had body hair. Believe it or not, you can even grow a “happy trail” due to this! Although not ideal, you just may become a little hairier while your hormones are out of whack. The good news is you shouldn’t turn into Big Foot. If you do though, I’m sure you’ll totally rock it.

Changing Foot Size

Are your shoes fitting a bit more snug these days? Your foot may be bigger! Pregnancy can cause all sorts of things, such as fluid retention and unbalanced hormones. All of these things can come together to cause your foot to grow bigger than it previously had been. This is one of the more weird pregnancy symptoms out there.

This happened to my mom! Her feet grew half a shoe size with each pregnancy. Mine didn’t grow… but I was also one of the lucky ones with no swelling. I can thank my gestational diabetes for this one, as I had to eat very healthy during third trimester!

If you want more food ideas to help keep the swelling down while pregnant, this is a good list that I used:

Metallic Taste in Your Mouth

If you have discovered a sudden metallic taste in your mouth, try not to be too concerned. This is called Dysgeusia and is expected in pregnancy. Ugh, I had this so bad in 1st trimester. Everything tasted like metal, making it even harder to get food down. The good news is it typically passes after 1st trimester.

It is thought that the cause is changing pregnancy hormones. You may also find that other foods, including those you once loved, now taste different than they did before you got pregnant.

To help combat the metallic taste, try chewing sugar-free gum or on sugar-free mints.

This one is very uncommon but does happen! This is usually caused by other pregnancy symptoms. Some other symptoms that may actually be triggering your hiccups include:

  • You have shortness of breath
  • You feel sick (hello 1st trimester)
  • You have indigestion
  • You’re stressed out
  • You’re eating unusual foods

The most annoying part is that the hiccups can last for hours. Don’t worry, though, because it’s not causing any physical harm to you or your baby.

Not Liking Your Partner

Of all the weird pregnancy symptoms that sometimes happen, this one is by far the strangest. While you may love your partner to the ends of the earth, you may find you absolutely can not stand them during pregnancy.

Take a deep breath, because you don’t actually hate it. You are totally normal, and so is not liking your partner during pregnancy. There are many reasons why this happens, but hormones are once again to blame, as are pregnancy fatigue, elevated stress levels, and more. This may continue after the baby is born, so try to hang on. You will eventually like them again.

One other way this particular pregnancy symptom may play out is that you may suddenly find your partner stinks to you. Again, don’t panic. This one is normal, too, and is caused by the changing hormones in your body, making your sense of smell more sensitive. If it happens, you can experiment with changing soaps, deodorants, or even laundry detergent to see if that will help.

I hate to say it, but this happened to me, and I felt SO bad for my husband. I swear he is not a smelly guy lol, but I just couldn’t stand being around him 1st trimester. Although my aversion to any smell was off the charts.

And don’t get me started on garlic. If my hubby ate garlic with a meal, I would be running to the bathroom. Again, not his fault. Our senses are so heightened, and our hormones are throwing us WAY off.

All of this usually passes once you enter your 2nd trimester.

Bad Breath

No matter how many times you brush your teeth or chew a breath mint, you may still find that you suffer from a severe case of halitosis while pregnant. Again, those blasted pregnancy hormones are wreaking havoc! Unfortunately, this is one odd pregnancy symptom that you can not do too much about.

Making sure to brush and floss regularly and using mouthwash after each time can help but may not deal with the problem entirely. And don’t forget to pop in some gum. I like the PÜR brand, because it is sugar free and aspartame free.

Bladder Accidents

Have you ever heard a pregnant woman complain about not being able to laugh or climb stairs for fear of peeing their pants? It’s true and can happen to any pregnant woman. This happens because the weight of your growing baby can weaken the muscles around your bladder. Once that happens, it is game on whenever pressure is put on the bladder, such as when you laugh or do strenuous activity.

If you’re currently dealing with this, your best bet is to wear a bladder liner each day just in case.  I like the Cora Bladder Liner brand that can be found on Amazon. Also, be sure to keep yourself as dry as possible to not risk infections such as a yeast infection or UTI.

So these are the weirdest symptoms I’ve heard of. Do you have any to add to the list?

So there you have it! Some Uncommon Pregnancy Symptoms. Do you have any of the above?

If you experienced other Uncommon Pregnancy Symptoms not on the list, I would love to hear in the comments!!
