If you’re here reading this, then you probably already know how much it sucks watching your little one be uncomfortable from the dry skin patches. Not only does it itch, but it can also be painful.

My poor son has suffered from a child’s eczema since he was a newborn.

Since then…

I’ve been on the hunt for the right detergent that would be gentle on his skin and also be used by the rest of the family.

I’ve tried so many detergents out there, and along the way, I have found multiple amazing options out there!

Swapping out the detergents with harsh chemicals for something more gentle has been a game-changer in our house!

I can now switch out my ‘safe brands’ as I want without worrying about it making my son’s skin worse.

As parents, we know how challenging it can be to care for little ones with sensitive skin.

That’s why I’m sharing my journey to discover not just any baby detergent but the best laundry detergent specifically for kids with eczema.

I want you to find safe products for your family that you love, and I think you’ll find several on the list I provide below.

Understanding Eczema and Sensitive Skin

Before we get into the list of detergents, I want to quickly touch on why this matters.

Eczema is a common skin condition in babies and toddlers, characterized by dry, itchy skin.

Regular detergents, with their harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, can often worsen these symptoms.

That’s why choosing a hypoallergenic detergent is crucial.

Plus, if we can make an easy swap to get rid of some harsh chemicals, the whole family wins, right?

The Hunt for the Perfect Detergent

My search for the best laundry detergent for my son’s eczema was eye-opening.

I knew that better and safer alternatives were out there, but I never paid attention to it until I had no choice.

I learned that a natural laundry detergent, free from harsh chemicals, is the way to go.

These detergents are gentler on the skin and reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Overall, it’s just better to use.

Why Natural Laundry Detergent?

Natural laundry detergents are formulated without the chemicals that can trigger eczema flare-ups.

This means no artificial fragrances or irritants that can aggravate sensitive skin.

Instead, these detergents use ingredients that are kinder to both the skin and the environment.

The Role of Fabric Softener

One last point I want to touch on while we’re on the topic…let’s talk about fabric softeners.

I used to love them for their scent and softness, but I learned they could be a no-go for eczema-prone skin.

The chemicals in some fabric softeners can leave a residue on baby clothes, leading to itchy skin.

So, I waved goodbye to commercial fabric softeners and haven’t looked back.

Instead, I do one of the following:

  • Use wool balls. These work because it separates the layers of fabric in your laundry and allows hot air to circulate better throughout the clothing in your dryer.

  • Use a few sheets of Molly’s Suds fabric softener. These are compostable, plant-based static reducers and are made for sensitive skin.

Choosing the Best Laundry Detergent

So, what makes the best laundry detergent for babies with eczema? Here’s what I found out:

  1. Hypoallergenic Formula: This is non-negotiable. A hypoallergenic formula is less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritate sensitive skin.
  2. Free from Harsh Chemicals: Look for detergents free from dyes, fragrances, and other irritants.
  3. Effective on Tough Stains: Just because a detergent is gentle doesn’t mean it can’t tackle those tough baby stains.
  4. Suitable for Cold Water Washes: Washing baby clothes in cold water helps preserve their fabric and color, and it’s better for the environment!

DIY Detergent: A Homemade Recipe for Sensitive Skin

For those of you who love a bit of DIY and are looking for a gentle formula that’s kind to the skin, I’ve got just the thing – a homemade laundry detergent recipe!

This recipe not only smells amazing but also avoids irritation, making it a great choice for sensitive skin.

Plus, it’s super easy to whip up a batch. The ingredients are cheap and will last you, so this is a really great option if you are looking to save money!

Alright, let’s go over how to make it!

Ingredient List:

  • 1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Water
  • 8 drops per gallon of Essential oils (optional, but I adore lavender for its calming scent)

Instructions:

  1. Start by grating your Fels-Naptha soap bar. Use the smallest grater you have to ensure it melts quickly and easily.
  2. Boil 4 cups of water.
  3. Stir in the grated Fels-Naptha bar over medium heat until the soap is completely melted.
  4. Transfer this mixture into a large container, preferably a 5-gallon bucket with a lid.
  5. Add Borax and Washing Soda, stirring thoroughly to combine.
  6. For more scent, add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender is my personal favorite for its soothing aroma and gentle properties.

You can also cut this recipe in half and store it in a cute dispenser. This is the exact one I use from Amazon:

Half Gallon Glass Pump Dispenser Bottle, Large Jug with Pump for Laundry Soap Dispenser, Liquid Detergent, Fabric Softener, Syrup Pump - 64 oz Capacity - by Kitchentoolz

This gentle liquid laundry detergent is a fantastic homemade solution. It’s a gentle formula that effectively cleans clothes without the harsh chemicals found in some store-bought detergents.

Plus, making it yourself means you know exactly what’s going into it – no surprises!

Give it a try and see how it transforms your laundry routine, especially for those with sensitive skin.

Using Your Washing Machine Wisely

A quick note on washing machines: Make sure to give your machine a good clean with hot water regularly. This helps remove any detergent residue, mold buildup, and keeps it working efficiently.

Final Thoughts

Finding the best laundry detergent for toddler and babies with eczema has made such a difference in our lives. No more itchy skin, no more harsh chemicals, just clean, soft baby clothes and a happy baby.

Remember, every baby is different, so what works for one may not work for another. It might take some experimenting to find your perfect match, but it’s worth it.
